This intermediate-level practice takes 20 minutes and is best practised in the morning. Benefits include establishes deep sense of physical and emotional grounding and reduces anxiety and feelings of insecurity through earth element connection.

About This Practice

The Muladhara chakra, located at the base of the spine, represents our foundation and connection to the earth element (Prithvi). According to the Shiva Samhita and classical Tantric texts, this first energy center governs our sense of security, stability, and survival instincts. When the root chakra is balanced, we experience a profound sense of groundedness, physical vitality, and emotional resilience.

This guided meditation draws upon the ancient Ayurvedic understanding that the root chakra is intimately connected to the earth element and the Kapha dosha. The Charaka Samhita describes the importance of being rooted in one's physical body as the first step toward spiritual evolution. By directing awareness to the base of the spine and engaging with the Muladhara's seed mantra LAM, practitioners activate dormant energy that supports the entire chakra system.

The practice begins with establishing a stable seated posture, symbolizing the mountain-like quality of earth energy. Through progressive visualization, you will imagine roots extending from your body deep into the earth, drawing up stabilizing, nourishing prana. The red light visualization corresponds to the traditional color associated with Muladhara, as described in the Sat-Cakra-Nirupana, a foundational text on chakra meditation.

Regular practice of root chakra meditation is particularly beneficial for individuals with Vata imbalances, who may experience anxiety, restlessness, or feelings of being ungrounded. The Ashtanga Hridayam notes that grounding practices help pacify the mobile, airy quality of Vata dosha, creating a stable foundation for physical and mental health. This meditation also supports Kapha individuals by awakening sluggish energy at the base of the spine while maintaining the earthy stability that Kapha types naturally possess.

The technique integrates Mula Bandha (root lock) with rhythmic breathing to concentrate prana at the base of the spine. This combination of breath, bandha, and visualization creates a powerful synergy that ancient yogis considered essential for awakening Kundalini energy safely and systematically.

How to Practice

Sit in Sukhasana or Padmasana on the floor. Feel your sitting bones pressing firmly into the earth. Close your eyes and take 5 deep breaths, feeling gravity anchoring your body.

  2. 2

Bring awareness to the base of your spine, the perineum area. Visualize a glowing red lotus with four petals spinning slowly at this point, as described in classical Tantric texts.

  3. 3

Begin chanting the seed mantra LAM (pronounced 'lum') silently or aloud. Feel the vibration resonating at the base of your spine with each repetition. Continue for 3 minutes.

  4. 4

Visualize roots growing from your sitting bones deep into the earth. With each inhale, draw warm, red earth energy up through these roots into your Muladhara chakra.

  5. 5

Gently engage Mula Bandha by contracting the pelvic floor muscles. Hold this subtle lock while breathing normally. Feel energy concentrating at the root center for 3 minutes.

  6. 6

Expand the red light visualization to fill your entire lower body. Feel warmth, stability, and security radiating from the root chakra through your legs, hips, and lower abdomen.

  7. 7

Release Mula Bandha and sit in stillness. Affirm silently: 'I am safe, I am grounded, I am supported by the earth.' Rest in this feeling of deep stability for 3 minutes.
